Polaroid 55 Instant Film Test - Homemade SINAR Handy 4x5 Camera

This test was done to test the coverage of the Mamiya-Sekor 50mm lens that mates with the Mamiya Press Series of Medium Format Rangefinder Cameras.  The acceptable image would have been properly focused at infinity and covered the entire film area.

• Mamiya-Sekor 50mm ƒ/6.3, (for Universal Press)
• Synchro-Compur-P #0 Shutter (for Xenar 135mm ƒ/4.7)
• Schneider 65mm Helicoid

Back -

• Polaroid 545i Film Holder
• Polaroid Type 55 4x5 Instant Film (Dated: Jan 2009)

Well, I still believe that the Mamiya-Sekor 50mm Lens will cover the 4x5 format, or at least 6x12.  In short, I think I had too many simultaneous tests going on.  However, it is always nice to see a Polaroid 55 exposure.

Somehow, I need to find infinity for this lens, and then create a dedicated adapter/lens cone.  Then, I can try employing shims between the elements.  A different shutter, one achieving an opening of 2.27 mm and smaller is also needed to achieve ƒ/22.  Also, in this aperture/speed range, a film that may be exposed for a longer time than Polaroid 55 (less reciprocity failure?) would be useful as well.

If there is any item to convince you of the SINAR System brilliance, then this is it.

To setup the scenario of why you need this today, lets run with the assumption that you use a SINAR Large Format Camera and you use a ground glass to focus your images.  You probably use a dark cloth and a loupe, however this method of focusing can be rather cumbersome, and prohibits you from seeing your entire image.

Ok now, you have just completed the build of your SINAR Handy with a super wide Shneider Super-Angulon 47mm lens, however, even at the wide open aperture of f8, the image is pretty dark.

Generally speaking, if you are struggling to see a latent image on your ground glass, then the SINAR Binocular Reflex Magnifier will probably help. 

Of course all reflex viewers turn the ground glass image upside down for you, but the magnification is key, here.  Also if you don't need the magnification, you can flip the diopter out of the way.  The binocular, can be easily flipped around, as well as the Reflex Magnifier, so that you can find the position most conducive to getting the shot.  Not only does the Reflex Magnifier attach directly to a 4x5 ground glass, but it can also be directly attached to a 4x5 carrier frame.  You would then attach a spare bellows in between that carrier frame and to the 4x5 ground glass, to give more distance away from the ground glass.  This is also the setup for using the Reflex Magnifier with 5x7 or 8x10 format.

Quick note!  This removable Binocular is removed by actuating the spring loaded trigger, and attached the same way.  On the Reflex Magnifier, there are 2 studs which the Binocular attaches to.  This Binocular can also be used with another SINAR item, "Binocular Magnifier," which is not included. In a couple of the photos, I failed to attach the Binocular to both studs.  I point this out in case something appears wrong in those photos.  I assure you that it all works correctly.  My bad!

This unit is in great shape overall.  I believe the images tell the story. In side of the Reflex Magnifier are inverted instructions that can be viewed from the outside.
